Retinal imaging in animal models: Searching for biomarkers of neurodegeneration

چکیده

There is a pressing need for novel diagnostic and progression biomarkers of neurodegeneration. However, the inability to determine disease duration stage in patients with Alzheimer’s (AD) hinders their discovery. Because animal models allow us circumvent some these limitations, they have proven be paramount importance clinical research. Due clear optics eye, retina combined optical coherence tomography (OCT) offers perfect opportunity image neurodegeneration vivo , non-invasively, directly, quickly, inexpensively. Based on premises, our group has worked towards uncovering neurodegeneration-associated changes triple-transgenic mouse model familial AD (3×Tg-AD). In this work, we present an overview work topic. We report thickness variations retinal layers/layer aggregates caused by healthy aging AD-like conditions discuss implications focusing research efforts solely thickness. explore what other information embedded OCT data, extracted based texture analysis deep-learning approaches, further identify that could used early detection diagnosis. were able detect as 1 month age. also develop elastography system measure elasticity, which can conjunction conventional OCT. Finally, potential application technologies human steps needed make helpful screening tool

Animal Models for imaging

Animal models can be used in the study of disease. This chapter discusses imaging animal models to elucidate the process of human disease. The mouse is used as the primary model. Though this choice simplifies many research choices, it necessitates compromises for in vivo imaging. In the future, we can expect improvements in both animal models and imaging techniques.

Animal models of retinal injury.

Retinal injury is a common cause of profound and intractable loss of vision. Clinical outcomes are poor in both open and closed globe injuries because cell death, scarring, and a failure of tissue and axon regeneration are not ameliorated by current treatments. Much animal research is directed at understanding and modifying these pathologies, although results have yet to translate into clinica...

Animal Models of Retinal Ischemia

Retinal ischemia is a frequent source of irreparable visual impairment and even loss of sight, affecting over a hundred million individuals in the world. It is associated with a wide range of clinical retinal disorders, like ischemic optic neuropathies, obstructive retinopathies, carotid occlusive disorders, diabetic retinopathy and glaucoma. Retinal ischemia occurs when the blood supply to ret...

Photoreceptor-Based Biomarkers in AOSLO Retinal Imaging

Improved understanding of the mechanisms underlying inherited retinal degenerations has created the possibility of developing much needed treatments for these relentless, blinding diseases. However, standard clinical indicators of retinal health (such as visual acuity and visual field sensitivity) are insensitive measures of photoreceptor survival. In many retinal degenerations, significant pho...
